VOLUNTEERS at Tewantin’s Parkyn Hut Explore Centre have been recognised recently as the best fully staffed, volunteer-run visitor information centre in Queensland.

The announcement was made at the Queensland Information Centres Association conference hosted by Tourism Noosa.

Parkyn’s Hut started its life in the Gympie goldfields. It was carted to Tewantin more than 100 years ago, by a bullock team, then stood for many years in the Parkyn family’s backyard in Pelican Street where the RSL car park is now.

It has been well-used over the years - at one stage as a workshop for a boot cobbler and odd jobs man.

For more than 21 years Parkyn’s Hut has stood in Tewantin town square as the home of the Tewantin heritage and historical society which oversees the running of the centre.

Around 50 volunteers staff it seven days a week all year, and are passionate about embracing our local area’s history offering heritage walks. They organise an annual luncheon, inviting descendants of pioneering families to reconnect with each other.

Staff enjoy the support of local businesses, with nice connections to locals who pop in for a paper and a chat. And they are very grateful for Noosa Council’s support in the everyday running of Parkyn’s Hut - and councillors stopping off for a quick chat with volunteers as they pass.

The team feels very lucky indeed to have two strong, inspirational communityminded women as its patrons: long-time local and long-serving volunteer Elvie Johns and our favourite politician and great Parkyn’s Hut friend, Sandy Bolton.

Funds for Community Pavilion

PERMACULTURE Noosa members will soon see their dreams of the Community Pavilion fulfilled, with a generous $50,000 donation from the Bendigo Community Bank Cooroy providing the final funds needed to complete the project.

Despite valiant fundraising efforts being underway since 2020, the project needed an extra contribution to get it over the line, and this donation has done just that.

“We believe that our values are aligned with those of Permaculture Noosa,” said Trish Radge, Chair of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL), operators of Bendigo Community Bank Cooroy, as she surprised Permaculture Noosa members at their October club night.

“Bendigo Bank believe in feeding into the community, not off it, and up to 80% of Community Bank profits go back into the community allowing us to support projects like this,” said Ms Radge.

The Pavilion will be a hub for various groups, giving locals a place to connect and grow, surrounded by the flourishing permaculture gardens that embody the philosophy of ‘earth care, people care and fair share’. Even the walls within the Pavilion itself will be made from crushed earth!

“It will be used for club meetings, gatherings and workshops. We envision the pavilion will also be available for other local groups to enjoy such as playgroups, support groups, for exercise classes and morning teas,” said Sandra Guy, Vice President of Permaculture Noosa.

With this generous contribution the Pavilion will soon be up and running in Emerald Street Cooroy, and is a fantastic example of how who you bank with can directly enrich the community you live in.

EXTRAVAGANZA GETS BIGGER AND BETTER

IF you missed the much-loved Eumundi Christmas Extravaganza last year, to put it simply you missed out! It was spectacular and this year is set to be the biggest, best and most extravagant ever! Save the date - Sunday December 4 from 1pm.

What makes is so great you may ask? Well to start with it is free. At a time of year when you may feel like all you do is put your hand in your pocket, not so here. Free entry, free rides and free entertainment.

The rides have exploded this year to include not one but two giant slides (sponsored by the Imperial Hotel and EDCA), the Original Eumundi Markets Tea Cup Ride, the Cooroy RSL Round Up Ride, the Trackless Train and the Sizzler.

After being inundated by a downpour two years ago, organisers Eumundi & District Historical Association decided that they never wanted to see a sea of disappointed faces again. So thanks to support from Experience Eumundi, a

massive marquee will cover the stage with hundreds of chairs undercover.

Sponsored by Wythes Real Estate, the stage show entertainment has taken a step up with festive performances organised by Hinterland Carols including Noosa District Concert Band, Eumundi State School, Coast Academy of Dramatic and Musical Arts, Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Santa’s Festive Show, the Sundowners and the Kitty Kats with special guest MC, Karl Sklenars.

There will also be roving performances by Nova Star Stilt walkers and Aerial Dreaming. Plus the newest addition is Santa arriving on a sleigh pulled by real reindeers!

To top off the night, Experience Eumundi have sponsored fireworks to light up the sky!

This project has also been proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council’s Grant Program. Other sponsors who have helped make the Christmas magic happen include Dan Purdie MP, Noosa Hinterland Realty, Equip 4 Hire, Rotary Club of Eumundi, Eumundi Voice, Noosa Outback, SPV Accounting, Nicholsons Solicitors, QCWA Eumundi, Woombye Dental, Ikatan Spa, Sandy Bolton MP, Firefly Solutions, Big Heart Bamboo, Gridleys Homestead B&B and Eumundi Square.

REUSABLE CHRISTMAS BAGS

THIS year at the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Christmas in Cooroy event on December 9 these wonderful, reusable shopping bags are to be distributed by Santa on our special night. Kindly made and donated by Patches of Cooroy, these bags will no doubt be seen all around our town over the coming year. Image-On Screen Printing also printed the logo on the front pocket which can include your keys, phone or those small items that go missing in your larger bags. This project is a wonderful opportunity to address the plastic pollution problem and allow our community to foster sustainable behavioural change by reusing these community made bags. The intention is also to fill the bags with goodies from local businesses. If you have items to contribute to the 300 bags that will be given away on the night, please contact admin@cooroy.com.au with details of your item.

Amazing equines at work

Sunshine Coast Riding for the disabled

THE back paddock is raised and large enough for the horse carriage to take full, wide circles allowing the horse to get up a nice trot. The volunteer drivers are putting the horses through their paces, warming them up for this mornings Carriage Program.

Today’s first participant, a young man, looks quite reluctant to board the carriage. A volunteer talks to him and gently coaxes him forward. Karen, a sprightly octogenarian who moves like someone half her age, confidently has the situation in hand. Karen has twenty five years experience with SCRDA. When I see them next the young man is settled in the carriage, smiling and animated. They are ready to set off. He now looks so comfortable and relaxed that he appears to be an expert carriage rider. Once the carriage is underway, it’s just the driver, the rider and the horse, as they sail around the paddock.

I am greeted by Carolyn Neville who started volunteering here in 2015. Just a year later she was invited to join the committee and in 2017 she became the President. Carolyn worked as a special education teacher aide for 14 years and used to take the children from school to do riding activities at the old SCRDA Ninderry premises. When she decided to take a year’s leave and try volunteering, she worked with dogs and horses, but the horses won out.

“The horses took over. I used to ride as a young girl, but I never owned a horse. Every opportunity I was trying to ride and to go away on (horse) camps.”

Many volunteers go on to become SCRDA coaches, fully trained and accredited. They have specific training and skills in coaching, driving, education, assessing and Hippotherapy (more on that later). Here they provide equine based therapy for around 150 participants. They deliver therapeutic and recreational riding and driving programs, open to all within the disability community on the Sunshine Coast.

The programs are expertly developed, designed to cater to the varying needs of the community, and they rotate fortnightly. Group Therapy and Horse Interaction, introduce members to horses and opportunities for learning new tasks. The Equine Assisted Learning program assists in a participants (mental) wellbeing. Saddle Club is an accessible form of Pony Club and gives kids over the age of eight a chance to have riding lessons. It is an inclusive program, meaning for members both with a disability and without, allowing young kids without a horse to participate in pony club style activities like catching a horse, grooming and feeding, as well as riding. Today I have been invited to watch the Carriage Program, designed for those who are unable to ride.

Carolyn explains, “The disability range is from ASD (autism spectrum disorder) right through to wheel chair participants with limited ability. The wheelchair participants in particular do carriage and if they are able to learn to drive we teach them, but if they are not able it is a pleasure drive. We also have participants who come in wheelchairs, but can weight bear or stand on their own two feet and they can ride. We have a hydraulic lift that was donated and it lifts the participant to the height of the horse, so they can mount.”

At the back paddock, Maddy has arrived and is ready to ride. The volunteers have harnessed Lewis, a lovely big bay horse who looks solid and dependable. The ‘whip’ (carriage driver) is helped by three other volunteers, each with a specific role to make sure the participant is safe, the whip

is safe, the horse is safe and the carriage is safe. Safety is the number one priority.

Maddy is twenty-five and has been coming to SCRDA for over 10 years. Her needs are high and she is with her carer Sophie.

“Maddy’s favourite thing is trotting because it’s bumpy and it’s fast and she is a bit of a dare devil. She would have it fast the whole time if it was her choice. She loves being out of the house and she does not like being stuck at home all day.”Sophie encourages Maddy and double checks her helmet. Maddy smiles. She is excited and taps her helmet with her hand. She gives Sophie her hand sign for riding, joining her hands and signalling as if she is holding the reins. She communicates to Sophie, ‘on Friday’s I go horse riding’. They try to come weekly when spots are available.

“It’s one of her favourite things to do. You love it don’t you Maddy?”

The volunteers are ready for her and she is calm and composed. Sophie says, “Maddy knows that she has to be quiet now

and not spook the horse”. Lewis is warmed up and waiting calmly. The volunteers take their positions as Maddy’s wheelchair slips straight into the purpose built carriage via a ramp at the back. Safety check, and they are off.

Like most successful organisations SCRDA depends on volunteers. These volunteers have a commitment that borders on devotion. Julie Templeton, a volunteer for over 20 years is Head Coach. As we watch Maddy she proudly shares, “The carriage team are very much a team and they all look after each other. They are an awesome bunch.” Another volunteer is Lindi, a physio-therapist who has been at SCRDA for twenty years also. Lindi runs the Hippotherapy program, which literally means horse-assisted treatment. It is for people who are physically vulnerable and have various health issues. Some participants are quite ill or terminal.

Volunteers can be horse leaders or side walkers who support the rider. They can

Page 10 | Your Local Lifestyle November 2022 COMMUNITY
The horses are very intuitive about what they are doing. They will even change their gait if the rider is unbalanced. IT’S A CRISP, SUNNY MORNING AT THE SUNSHINE COAST RIDING FOR THE DISABLED (SCRDA) CLUBHOUSE AND AFTER MONTHS OF CHALLENGING WEATHER, THE VOLUNTEERS SPREAD OUTDOORS.

do office work or property maintenance. Carolyn adds, “There are people who ride with us and have a disability and also volunteer with us. There is no need to have any knowledge of disability or horses. We do on the job training. Once they become a member and get their blue card they can have a mentor, who will mentor them through until they become an independent volunteer, doing what we all love to do. The horse responsibility falls on our horse manager. She is the only full-time, paid position.”

The horses also undergo specialised and ongoing training. Some are purchased outright, some donated and some are on a free lease but all begin on a six week trial basis and they are tested.

“The horses are very intuitive about what they are doing. They will even change their gait if the rider is unbalanced. They will shift their weight to correct the person on top without being prompted. They have an intuition and they read body language. They know what your heart beat is,” says Carolyn. Some horses are sponsored by individuals or groups, for the rate of $2000 per year, per horse. I meet a lovely little 12 hand high, piebald pony who is sponsored in memory of a late participant. The participant’s sponsorship is a beautiful legacy and continues through the little pony’s ongoing work.

From humble beginnings in 1978, starting in Palmwoods, SCRDA have been at their purpose built Yandina Creek facility for ten years. Today it is a state of

the art facility and with improvements like a sprinkler system and individual horse stalls, it can be hired to the equestrian community which generates valuable income. But it has lost none of its soul or purpose and still looks and feels like a tight knit community club.

“We had a young boy, 6 years old, come for an assessment to start his journey. He was climbing all over Dad. We tried to fit a helmet on to him and he didn’t really want to but eventually we got one on him to size his head. A week or two later, he came for his first session. He was non-verbal autistic and had not spoken all his life. He came to ride, we got him on the horse eventually and he did a whole 45 minute session and did not want to get off early. A couple of weeks later he came back with mum, dad, aunty and grandma, sitting watching him do his thing and they are all crying. Someone went over to check they were alright and they said, ‘we can’t thank you enough for what you have done for our family with this riding’. The day he had been riding he went to bed, woke up in the morning and said his first full sentence, ‘Mamma I want to ride Vinnie’. We have little miracles like that all the time.” Carolyn tells me he still comes riding and is now a chatter box. “One of our volunteers always wears sunglasses so you can’t see her crying. She gets moved a lot, quite often. It’s amazing what happens here.”

Time to rug up

WITH yet another soggy La Niña summer in full swing, it’s time to find new and innovative solutions for your outdoor soft furnishings. Weaver Green offers a unique and beautiful answer to our wild Australian climate, with its range of eco-friendly outdoor and indoor rugs, cushions, and table linens hand woven entirely from discarded plastic bottles.

The product was brought to Australia in 2019 by Noosa locals Nikki and Rupert Rowe who met while travelling the world on super yachts.

“We started this business in 2019; we had an antique shop before that, specialising in English and French antiques,” Nikki said.

“We saw Weaver Green during a buying trip to England and knew this product was perfect for the Australian climate and lifestyle.”

Weaver Green was created in the Devon countryside by eco-entrepreneurs Tasha and Barney Green, who started the company to help deal with the mountains of plastic waste.

“We contacted them back in 2017 and started stocking the products and there has just been such great feedback.”

From the collecting of the bottles to shipping the final product to the customer,

company stand apart from most other homeware brands.

The rugs, mats and cushions are all hand-woven in India – and all made from recycled plastic PET bottles.

“We work with women groups to collect the bottles, with some 40% coming directly out of the waterways; the rest are collected before ending up in landfill,” Nikki said.

“They are great indoors and out, completely machine washable, mould and stain resistant and are dust mite free, which is great for allergy sufferers.”

The yarn is then made using a closed loop system, which purifies and recycles the same water over and over. Weaver Green also uses non-toxic dyes to colour the yarn, and unwanted rice and wheat husks to heat the vats. Overall, making yarn in this way uses 90% less water and 70% less energy than making yarn from scratch using conventional methods.

To date, Weaver Green has already turned over 200 million plastic bottles

for summer

ottomans and footstools.

“All of our flat weave rugs are hardwearing and stand up to the elements in outdoor settings,” Nikki said.

Nikki is always happy to advise on interior decisions too.

“Take some photos of the area you want to decorate and bring them down; we love to give styling advice, so there’s no need to guess,” she said.

So if you want to help Weaver Green with their mission of turning single-use into everyday useful go and see them at 5/33 Gateway Drive, Noosaville, and become part of the solution! www.weavergreen.com.au

Joe’s Waterhole to retain classic pub feel

PLANS for the new renovations at Joe’s Waterhole were submitted to Sunshine Coast Council in September.

Joe’s Waterhole has been a staple in Eumundi since the late 1800s when the town was first established. Originally called the Railway Hotel. The name was changed to Eumundi Hotel in 1899 by Sidney Arundell. It was then changed to the Commercial Hotel in 1906 and in the 1920s the pub was rebuilt after a fire tore through the building.

The historic building in Eumundi will undergo some light improvements in the front bar, making sure all the great parts are retained in the original part of the building. The more recent additions to the pub will undergo some more substantial

work. This work will see Matsos bring in a brewery capable of brewing its famous Mango and Ginger Beer in house, as well as a selection of limited releases that champion local products and flavours.

To accompany the new brewery, there will be plenty of outdoor space to enjoy a beer, wine or food out in the sunshine.

The landscaping will be family friendly with plenty of space for large gatherings or quiet secluded catch ups under the trees. Other staples of Joe’s will not be lost - the humble classic pub feed and live music will continue to grow. For now - The beer is cold and the people behind the bar are as friendly as ever.

WITH numerous hospitality openings in the current market, few will surpass this one. We’re looking for someone with vision to build upon their name, brand, and signature dish by offering an exciting business venture in the Noosa Hinterland. This opportunity literally comes with bells and whistles for the right person, team, or partnership.

Here’s our vision of the new ‘Village Green Café Amamoor’ café operator.

You’re a dedicated coffee creative / food artisan serious about delivering unforgettable experiences for patrons. Putting this dining destination on the map as a one-stop-shop for refuelling whether that’s an espresso to go, or a pour over to enjoy trackside as the majestic Mary Valley Rattler steam train rolls into town each operational day Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. An operator serving up an impressive café menu to locals 5 days a week from the refurbished Queensland Railway Canteen Carriage complete with undercover alfresco dining. A menu where the produce is given the same respect as the quality sourced coffee beans. A venture where every café connoisseur in the Mary Valley will know your opening hours off by heart.

Welcome to Amamoor, quaint tourist

village nestled in the heart of Noosa Hinterland.

The Village Green encompasses the Amamoor Station precinct. Here locals socialise at monthly Cheers & Beers events. Day trippers and campers stop in their thousands on route to the famous Gympie Muster; and Rattler passengers disembark to stretch legs, grab a bite to eat, and watch the train turn in preparation for the return journey to Gympie.

This unique facility is owned by Not-forProfit, Friends of Amamoor who are keen to engage an experienced café operator whose vison aligns with theirs in making this café a dining drawcard for locals and visitors.

World champ bowled over at Cooroy RSL

THERE is always one larrikin in every sporting code, with all the controversy that goes with it.

Even in the genteel sport of bowling.

Ian ‘Shoey’ Schuback can lay claim to that title, having struck silver and gold at two Commonwealth Games respectively, four world championships and a plethora of international, national and state bowls titles across 15 years.

Add to that, 16 years as a television commentator on the same sport – often with outspoken views – and the knowledge and the runs on the board to be so.

The golden-haired bronzed Shoey with Shane Warne-lookalike qualities was always going to have an interesting and at times charmed life. And he grabbed it with both hands - eventually.

Shoey was born in Sale, Victoria. His father, a local butcher and talented sportsman, thus held elevated status in the small community.

“Mum was known as Jack Schuback’s wife; I was known as Jack Schuback’s son,” Shoey said.

“I left home at fifteen – I had other reasons to be me and not just my father’s son.”

Melbourne beckoned, and while Shoey wasn’t studious, he was talented in many sports, including tennis.

“I got a job in debentures at the State Electricity Commission. The only thing I enjoyed at school was economics.”

That skill gave birth to a lifelong love affair with the stock market, as he then ploughed his meagre $400 savings into shares including a nickel company called Poseidon, making a handy $2000 in the process.

“I was too young to hold a car licence, so I bought a BMW motorcycle from Germany which was worth as much as a Holden Kingswood.”

“I was pretty proud to be stopped often by the police who just wanted a look at the bike.”

Shoey developed his tennis skills, and fortune again shone.

“I won a state title and was offered a playing/coaching contract in West Germany by a sponsor, Donnay, who made racquets used by Bjorn Borg.

“I was already living with fast cars, fast women - but in one of the greatest mistakes of my life, I knocked it back.

“I previously could have played AFL –but I had declined an offer to train with Footscray.

“With bowling I realised it was time to get real.”

The next few years saw Shoey play football and tennis, start a sports store in Traralgon, and meet his first wife-to-be Cheryl.

They moved to the Gold Coast in 1980where a chance offer to play a social bowls game at Coolangatta changed his life again.

“This businessman, who had almost made the Olympic rowing team, had plenty of contacts and asked me to ‘come and play bowls’.

“[After,] I couldn’t wait to get back to it. People there said I had a natural talent for it.”

Barely more than a year later, he’d won his first state title and stopped coaching tennis at Ken Rosewall’s tennis complex. He was hooked. His career rocketed, as one of the youngest ‘star’ players ever in the history of bowls.

“I started in 1982, was a Queensland representative in ’83 – then they picked me to play the singles at the Commonwealth Games (Edinburgh) in 1986, one of the youngest bowlers to be selected at the time.

“I won silver. The Queen presented the medal. She spoke to me for about 30 seconds – no others – it was one of the highlights of my whole life. Our noses were only three inches apart.

“The British media went mad – all they wanted to know was what Her Majesty had asked me. The poor old gold medalist didn’t get a look-in.

“Four years later, I got selected to play pairs for Australia at the 1990 Auckland Games. We fortunately won gold, and Bob Hawke put his arm round my shouldersthat was so special to me.

“I had a rapid rise thanks to massive help from good people.”

But bowling’s popularity was waning by the late 1980s.

“It was at its peak in Australia in the early 1980s: a final would peak with 3000 spectators watching you bowl; now it would be 300.

“I saw the very first ABC broadcast of Jack High just after the Commonwealth Games in 1982. I thought ‘gee, that looks an exciting game on TV’.

“To think that there was bigger prize money then than now – and top bowlers were household names then.

“Thanks to ABC Television coverage, a show was on every Friday night at 8.20pm, then 5 to 6pm on Saturdays.

“Every little town around the country had a bowls club or an RSL with a bowling green. ABC had average viewership of 300,000 around Australia. The profile 35 to 40 years ago was much bigger.

“It’s a younger demographic, yet in Australia bowls is now seen to be a pastime for the elderly. It has not been promoted or marketed to get young ones playing.

“It’s chess on grass – and the friendliest sport in the world.”

Shoey was winning tournaments everywhere, but his inner clock was saying ‘stop’ in about 1995.

“I’d won four world titles and a few Australian ones. But while people know the world ones, they don’t know the others –and no-one remembers a runner-up.”

Also, being quite outspoken, particularly about the bowling movement’s lack of promotion of the sport, he was collecting enemies and a tall-poppy media cabal was growing.

Then about 1991, the ‘Great BowlTampering Affair’ occurred.

“I was playing the Australian indoor singles on the Gold Coast, going for three in a row having won the previous two years.

“In the semi-final I flogged my rival –then he challenged the legality of my bowls.

“There was only one licensed tester at the time – in Brisbane – so they just ran the master bowl down a chute.

“In short, they deemed my bowls as illegal.

“They took the bowls to Brisbane overnight; they passed, but the damage had been done.

“The media that night – Channel 7, 9, all of them - screamed that I’d cheated and been disqualified.

“And I was not reinstated into the final.”

Shoey said one regret was “I didn’t sue Bowls Australia, because they’re not illegal”.

“It was denial of natural justice – but it was the tall poppy syndrome. Along with some crusty old umpire saying my biased bowls were too straight.”

Shoey spent the next year or so in the UK, where bowling was the third mostpopular sport on television, and he was already a legend there.

“I’d been battling a lot of officials [in Australia]; I was a bit outspoken, and they cut you down.”

By 1995, he was back – and divorced, time away for so many years having taken its toll – although he and Cheryl are still close friends and share two daughters.

“I got beaten in a tournament. A director from ABC Sport asked me if I’d like to come into the commentary box the next day.”

“I immediately recalled every school report that said although my results were quite pleasing, I should refrain from commenting in class.”

It began a TV commentary career which still runs today, including five Commonwealth Games. Shoey was in Birmingham this year commenting for the BBC’s Commonwealth Games bowls coverage.

He started, and has remained, a ‘colour’ commentator – perhaps the Kerry O’Keefe of bowling. And he knows most of the world’s best.

“I’m never backward in coming forward to laugh at somebody’s bad luck and some viewers might not find that entertaining. It’s what a colour commentator is expected to do. If it’s a boring match, add a bit of colour.”

Together with commentary, Shoey was also the assistant coach to the Australian team for several years.

In 2007, he met his new life partner Sandy Bolton, who as Noosa’s State MP has the same energy and commitment to work as he.

“We met at Cooroy RSL where Sandy was consulting for the club’s acquisition of the bowls club.

“I’d read an article about her success attracting juniors to play bowls and phoned for an appointment.

“After checking her diary, she said the earliest she could meet with me was 11 days later, and only for 15 minutes between 2.30–2.45.

“So, I rushed through my questions and when told my time was up, I asked if she was single.

“She said yes, and then I told her I was off to Perth the next morning and would be back Friday week - and if she wished to get married the following day, I was available.

“Upon my return, I received a text asking if the wedding was still on?

“Life doesn’t get any better than that!”

In 2009, Shoey’s contribution to bowls was officially recognised when he was awarded an OAM for services to the sport of bowls as player, commentator and coach.

In 2015 he wrote a book, Bowls Unbiased and Uncensored, containing his tips on winning, and motivational lines which helped him on. His favourite is from Og Mandino: “Failure will never overtake you

if your determination to succeed is strong enough.”

Shoey’s determination was truly tested when a surgeon wanted to remove his lymph nodes to treat a stage 4 melanoma.

“When I refused the surgery and radiation, I was told I had 3-5 years left at best. [So] I got my body into an alkaline state and the tumor vanished.

“That was eight years ago, and I feel fantastic now.”

Shoey and Sandy left their 15-acre Cooroibah property two years ago to buy a more manageable and accessible property on Noosa’s North Shore.

“My life now is supporting Sandy - I know what it’s like to put the hours in that Sandy does – seven days a week, 14-16 hours a day at times.

“We have a couple of dogs and a cat –and nine grandchildren between us.

“My mum’s 96 and still going strong on the Gold Coast, and my five grandkids are there too, so I’m always busy checking on them.

“I still love playing the share market, researching companies, and going out for lunch with friends - life can’t get any better.

“And to have a special partner like Sandy, she’s just an unbelievable person – it’s probably the greatest success of my life meeting Sandy.”

‘GETTING away from it all’ can mean different things to different people.

For some, that can mean just slowing down a bit and re-charging the batteries at home or the local beach – or at the other extreme, spending a few days far away in the true outback.

But the people of the Noosa hinterland and surrounds have a special place they can go for some easy piece and quiet, and it’s not far away.

It’s called Boreen Point, on the shore of Lake Cootharaba. Lake Cootharaba is

a saltwater, tidal lake and is the largest lake in the Noosa River system. Being a mere 15-minute drive from Tewantin via McKinnon Drive, or Pomona via Louis Bazzo Drive, putter into the cute little village, stop the car – and listen.

It’s not what you will hear: it’s what you won’t hear. And that’s the thing.

No speeding cars, no noisy diesel buses, or Harleys, or trucks – especially quarry trucks – and no jet skis.

Just birdsong, and the susurrus of the lake water as it softly caresses the shore.

“How’s the serenity” is literal here.

It’s the place where you realise just how much ‘ambient’ noise you have to live with daily – because suddenly it’s not there.

This is a destination for an eco-weekend or longer, to re-engage with nature and to enjoy mainly non-motorised water activities, sharing your experience with an abundance of bird- and wildlife.

Camping is the go around here – or glamping – and one of the best locations is the award-winning Habitat Noosa Everglades Ecocamp, which is set amongst

65 hectares of national park, and adjacent to the lake.

You can hire canoes, wave skis, kayaks and tinnies to take you around the lake – which is also part of the Noosa River system, so there are plenty of places to explore.

Habitat has a kids’ club, in the school holidays, with activities such as archery; there’s a bar and bistro – it even has its own micro-brewery, Eco Brewing Company –and there are tours up the waterways to tea tree-infused creeks to discover the wildlife and explore the region.

Focus on Boreen Point & Cootharaba Koalas on the Move. Be aware! noosabiosphere.org.au/koalas-otm The number of koalas being injured or killed on Noosa roads is increasing each year. Most strikes occur during breeding season when koalas are on the move. Juveniles are dispersing from their mothers to find their own home range while others are looking for a mate. BETWEEN JULY AND DECEMBER KOALAS ARE ON THE MOVE. BE AWARE. DRIVE WITH CARE. If you see a sick or injured koala, call it in! Phone 5527 2444. “Watch out for our friends too!”

Noosa Council also operates Boreen Point Campground, again right next to the water and close to the village centre, with all the facilities for campers and RVs to plug in and chill out.

The centre of Boreen Pt revolves around the village’s general store and meeting place, Coffee Tribe, which is also the main local café. Get the local goss along with a coffee and provisions here.

If it’s Sunday, you can watch members of the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club duke it out on the waters in their Hobie cats and sailboat heats.

Of course, nothing is quite complete without a visit to the local watering hole.

In Boreen Point’s case, it’s not importer beer – it’s an entire imported pub, removed from Gympie 35 years ago.

The Appollonian Hotel is the other community meeting place – and what a place it is.

Lunch and dinner seven days a week, with live music and open mic nights –and on Sundays its famous Smokehouse barbecue is on from 11.30am-3pm. It’s hugely popular, so get there early.

The Appollonian also has 10 accommodation rooms with a capacity for 26 people.

Boreen Point is also co-host to a biennial arts event called Floating Land, where sculptures are erected close to, or on, the lake waters.

The art ‘collaborates’ with the natural environment, and some of the pieces sitting on the calm Cootharaba waters as the light

changes can be a quite the feast of senses.

The international event began in 2001 in Boreen Pt and is now shared with a similar program on Park Road in Noosa Heads.

The next Floating Land biennale event will be in 2023.

TAKE

Exploring Elanda Point

WELL the weather isn’t getting any better, so sometimes you just have to get your feet a little muddy.

Elanda Point has much to offer and a great story behind its humble beginnings.

Timber was the backbone of the local economy, and Mill Point was one of the earliest timber settlements in Queensland. This thriving timber mill was developed by McGhie Luya &Co at Elanda Point from 1860-1892. The saw mill was on about 25 hectares and employed up to 200 workers. Sadly five men lost their lives on July 29, 1873 trying to keep warm around the boiler at Mill Point. They had little warning when part of the boiling plate started to bulge, unfortunately the shattering explosion was too intense as they tried to escape. The explosion was heard three miles away. This site is now a heritage site.

Mill Point is just one part of exploring Elanda Point. You can also visit Kinaba Information Centre opened in September 1978 by The Hon.J.Bjelke-Petersen MLA, Premier of Queensland.

There is ample parking, at the information hut about 100 metres before

entering Habitat camping ground. Across the road is the Cooloola Wilderness Trail with a clearly marked sign to help choose your journey.

Elanda circuit via Mill Point 5.0km Kinaba Information Centre 6.1km Cemetery 1.5km

These are just three options. I have been a few times but have not yet been able to explore all the trails. I can’t be exact on times or kilometres but give yourself at least four hours to wander around. The hike is very relaxing as it is flat as a tack, it is very open in spots with no shade and if it has been raining becomes very wet.

We walked to Kinaba information hut, visiting the cemetery and returning along the old tramway track towards Mill Point which will bring you out into the camping ground.

So many beautiful aspects to enjoy along this walk. Wide open spaces with the warmth of the sun beating down on you.

I just love the paperbark trees you wander though. They take me to another world.

There is also a large area of cabbage palms along the river, the sun shining through

them looks amazing. And there is no shortage of wildlife: kangaroos, goannas and king fishers with the brightest blue along with many other bird species. When you reach Kinaba which has toilets and plenty of room to have a packed lunch - enjoy a dip in the water and refresh before you head back. Be sure you explore the board walk where you can see large fish swimming in the shallow waters.

Mill Point is quite amazing to visit as you stand there and think back in time, far from the world we know today.

On our return we enjoyed lunch and a beverage at the Habitat restaurant at the camping ground.

This walk is for the whole family, but unfortunately dogs are not allowed. Remember it can get very wet after rain and on one of my walks the mosquitos were very bad. You can also get to Mill Point and Kinaba by Kayak.

Habitat Noosa has much to offer check out their web page for more information head to www.habitatnoosa.com.au

Happy Hiking remember your sunscreen, hat, and water (and on this walk mosquito repellent!).

Let’s Get Physical! - A fundraiser for LillianMARY VALLEY PLANS FESTIVAL

FOODIES!

MAKE sure you have Saturday November 26 marked off on your calendar folks… because you’re in for a fun night! And let’s just say…. things are about to get physical!

Do you love a good dress up? Live music? Entertainment? Love the amazing vibe at The Majestic Theatre in Pomona? And like helping out a good cause?

FOOD enthusiasts will get a taste of the GourMay Mary Valley festival planned for 2023 when it is launched on Saturday November 5 at the Amamoor Village Green.

Busby Street will come alive from 5.30-8pm when the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce shares its exciting plans. Guests will be tempted with a fabulous finger food menu provided by local businesses including Busby St Café, Taste of Croatia and Wild Vine Café with a background of music, a raffle and new GourMay Mary Valley t-shirts available for sale. A bar will be manned by Friends of Amamoor.

Chamber president Janelle Parker said the chamber was breathing life into the former Gympie region event GourMay, which had struggled to grow after the COVID pandemic.

“Our aim is to resurrect the GourMay name and hold a month-long series of events under the banner GourMay Mary Valley,” Mrs Parker said. Tickets for the festival launch on November 5 are $35. Bookings https://bit.ly/3MnCt9c

Well, go and find those bright leg warmers you have stashed away somewhere…. Rustle up some lycra…. Tease up your hair and let’s reminisce over some fun 80’s tunes while banding together as a community to help raise money for a local family doing it tough.

Lillian is a beautiful two year old Kin Kin local who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer (malignant rhabdoid tumour). She is the youngest of three, and obviously her family’s world has been turned completely upside down since the diagnosis. Not only have they had to process the shocking news, but mum Connie has had to stop working, and she and Lillian spend a lot of their time away from the rest of the family at hospital during treatment.

E Fitness in Pomona is known for hosting a fun 80’s aerobics night or two, helping to raise money where it’s needed. I grew up joining Mum while she did her Jane Fonda videos and Aerobics Oz Style every morning… So, when I found out about Lillian, there was no way that an 80’s aerobics night was escaping this one! Especially for this little cutie and her family.

For just $20 (kids are a gold coin donation) you will

be treated to live music, a lucky door prize, best dressed prize, a kids glow in the dark dance off, some fun entertainment from the Kin Kin drama group, and an 80’s aerobics ‘join in’ class with me. Some amazing raffle prizes will be up for grabs, yummy food will be available and there’s the possibility of a special guest appearance!

I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the amazing local businesses that I have reached out to for prizes on the night. Let’s just say… you will want to buy a raffle ticket (or 20) on the night! There is also a ‘big prize’ raffle too, with three BIG prizes up for grabs, with tickets able to be purchased NOW!

Make sure you follow E Fitness on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date with the ‘big prize’ raffle, as people not attending can purchase and go in the draw too. Without giving too much away now, prizes are seriously mind blowing and for just $5 a ticket or 3 for $10… it’s an absolute bargain! Let’s see what we can do as a community to help Lillian and her family. Every dollar counts. Let’s have some fun and LET’S GET PHYSICAL!

A huge shout out of thanks to The Majestic Theatre in Pomona for their very generous support for the night. It couldn’t be done without the Majestic – so thank you to all involved in making this happen.

Thanks for your support, Erin Yarwood.

On grabbing a bee, they will fly to a perch where they rub the hapless insect to remove the sting and

glands. A single Bee-eater can consume several hundred bees in a day, so they are not loved by beekeepers. Indeed, they were shot for a bounty in the early 1900s.

For a nest, Rainbow Bee-eaters dig a burrow into soft soil or sand. The tunnels are generally just under a metre long. They have quite narrow passageways through which the birds can only just squeeze. It’s thought that this may create a sort of piston effect, pushing air in and out of the tunnel.

Both parents build the nest, incubate and feed the young. In around half the cases studied in SEQ, a third adult bird, always a male, helped with the nest.

The eggs don’t all hatch at once, but rather a few days apart. The size discrepancy of nestlings results in around one in five baby Bee-eaters starving to death. Nature works in mysterious ways.

One can tell males from females by the long streamers that extend beyond their tails. These are longer and thinner on males and shorter and thicker on females. Sometimes, however, the tail streamers get broken so it’s not always easy to tell the sexes apart.

Rainbow Bee-eaters have reduced in number along Australia’s east coast by around fifty per cent over the past two decades. This could be a product of bee decline. The other reason may be cane toads invading nests. A four-year study in SEQ found that dogs, dingos and cane toads impacted on half of all Bee-eater nests under observation.

NOOSA IS LIVING WELL

Living Well Noosa offers residents free and low-cost access to a range of health and wellbeing activities.

Yoga, reiki healing, breath work and ‘Mums and Bubs’ pilates are just some of the current offers.

The launch of the program included a free ‘come-and-try’ morning to enable residents to get a taste of the various activities.

According to one of the attendees, Inga Giessmann, the Living Well Noosa program is an amazing initiative especially as it is accessible to a lot of people who don’t have access to mindfulness and wellbeing activities.

“Community is so important so big and I’d say one of the pillars of wellbeing and happiness. We need companionship and loved ones and to have supportive people in our lives to come together and also connect with ourselves,” added Ms Giessmann.

Programs Officer, Angela Romanowski, said more activities will be added to the program regularly, and residents can take part in the survey to shape the initiative by visiting Council’s Living Well Noosa webpage at noosa. qld.gov. au/living-well-noosa.

BECOME AN SES VOLUNTEER AND HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE

women in orange to

When disaster strikes there’s one thing you can always count on – that the men and women in orange will be there to help.

Noosa State Emergency Service Local Controller Warren Kuskopf thinks helping your community when they need it the most is incredibly rewarding. “You get to learn new skills, form new

friendships, get valuable qualifications, keep fit and get real-world experience,”

Mr Kuskopf said.

Council is lending its support to an SES recruitment drive to boost numbers this summer.

There are many different roles in the SES to suit a volunteer’s personal abilities and interests.

“All roles are vital in preparing for, and responding to, the different types of disasters and emergencies we experience in Noosa.”

“If you see yourself in orange and like the idea of providing hands-on assistance in emergency situations, there’s an operational role to suit everyone,” Mr Kuskopf said.

“There’s also a range of non-operational roles, such as admin, support and education that are just as important to the running of the SES.”

Now is a great time to become an SES volunteer. Visit SES on Council’s website at noosa.qld.gov.au/ses-volunteering to find out more or call the Local Controller on 0415 989 990.

ELECTRIC MOWER HELPS SLASH EMISSIONS BRIDGE PROJECT WINS AWARD

recharge the equipment from the sun via solar,” she said.

“So far we’ve installed more than 630kw of solar across 16 buildings.”

Council has already transitioned many of its traditionally petrol-powered tools to battery alternatives, with the mower one of the largest new electric tools now in use, in support of Council’s 2026 net-zero emissions target.

Gardens staff member Tahlia WalkerBonney said the new machine – which plugs in to a wall outlet to charge – was easy to handle and quick to get the job done, plus quieter than traditional mowers which made it a good fit for the gardens.

“Electric machinery and vehicles are the way of the future and Council is pleased to lead by example for the community in this space,” Ms Nolan said.

Council’s Tablelands Road Bridge B replacement project has taken out a top gong in this year’s Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Queensland (IPWEAQ) Excellence Awards.

The bridge rebuild scooped the award for best project between $1 million and $2 million.

A new electric ride-on mower is not only cutting the grass at Noosa Botanic Gardens, it’s also helping slash emissions from Council’s mowing operations.

“The more petrol-powered plant we

can swap out for newer, more efficient electric alternatives the better it is for the environment,” says Carbon Reduction Project Officer, Annie Nolan.

“The benefits are even greater where we’re able to draw the power needed to

Recently, Council upgraded two of its fleet vehicles to all-electric cars, adding to the six hybrid vehicles already on the road as part of Council’s fleet.

The new all-electric Hyundai IONIQ and MG ZS replaced a diesel-powered ute and a petrol-powered car.

“The project team developed a bespoke design solution to construct the replacement bridge on the same alignment as the existing and developed a detailed plan to ensure accessibility was a focus during construction,” judging panel member Patrick Murphy said, in declaring the project a deserving winner.

As Council works through its reconstruction program in the wake of this year’s floods, hinterland residents are being told to brace for what could be a summer of wild weather.

The La Nina weather system is back for another year, which typically increases the chance of above-average rainfall during spring and summer.

“The Local Disaster Management Group work all year to be prepared so it’s important every resident takes a few simple steps now to prepare their properties,” Disaster Management Officer James Ulyate said.

Four steps can make all the difference:

• Have a household emergency plan in place.

• Pack an emergency kit and have it ready to go.

• Clean gutters, check your roof.

• Check your insurance is up to date.

Mayor Clare Stewart said being

prepared can help reduce the impacts of disasters.

“We know the weather is becoming more unpredictable but improving our preparedness makes such a huge difference when disaster strikes,” she said.

About 1200 people have subscribed to Council’s free weather alert system Noosa Alert.

“This system provides targeted warnings to residents, so I really urge residents to sign up,”Mr Ulyate said.

Recently, Council staff were trained in the ground-breaking Simtable technology, which is part of Council’s ongoing effort to make the community more resilient.

The technology uses a projector to overlay hazard projections over local mapping and terrain in 3D. The system models fire and flood behaviours based on geophysical and meteorological

conditions to demonstrate how they might move through the landscape, and what impact it may have on the built environment.

Noosa is the first in Queensland to adopt the technology. For the latest, visit the Disaster Dashboard at disaster.noosa.qld.gov.au.

The awards program – now in its 20th year – celebrates projects and people who deliver exceptional outcomes for Queensland communities.

The bridge foundations were installed before the old bridge was removed and the project built in stages to minimise disruption for residents.

Council Project Manager, Dennis Luinstra, said the surrounding environment made the bridge rebuild particularly complicated.

“We had to build the replacement concrete bridge in the exact location of the old timber one, which was technically the most difficult option,” he said.

The Tablelands Road Bridge B project is a joint initiative of Noosa Council and the Australian Government through its Bridges Renewal Program.

LOCAL Belli Park business, Big Heart Bamboo has been celebrating their recent win at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show. The ‘Gourmet Bamboo Pickle Elixir’ brought home gold after scoring 91.3/100 at the event. This was the product’s first round of official judging.

“I was very happy to hear the news, the pickle was originally designed to be a gut health tonic and an elixir so to hear that it has been so well commended by high end judges at the Sydney Fine Food Show was a very rewarding moment,” said business founder Rebecca Dart.

“All the ingredients are 100% Queensland

grown (mostly from the Sunshine Coast), are free from artificial preservatives such as sulphides, and all contribute their own health benefit. The product itself is shelf stable for one year,” said Rebecca. Big Heart Bamboo is now into full swing of their Spring harvest so it’s a case of ‘all hands on deck’ while harvesting fresh shoots and simultaneously creating more pickles, chutneys & relishes, destined for retail, online and market purchases.

You can find Big Heart Bamboo at Witta and Kin Kin Markets and online. Also available at Kenilworth Dairies and Eumundi Service Station. www.bigheartbamboo.com

FENNEL

FENNEL makes my list of top five favourite ingredients ever. There are so many ways to cook it and it goes with just about anything.

Shaved in salads, pickled, roasted, caramelised, steamed, braised, pureed into velvety soup, crumbed and fried or even just cut into wedges and served with dips, fennel is always a winner.

It’s subtle aniseed flavour marries well with any seafood, but it also works well with chicken and pork. Finely sliced, tossed with rocket and shaved parmesan and dressed with good quality olive oil and lemon juice, it makes the perfect accompaniment to any meal.

CHICKEN BRAISED WITH TOMATOES, FENNEL AND OLIVES

Ingredients:

4 chicken marylands, cut in half

2 tbs olive oil

1 onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, sliced

1 tsp fennel seeds

2 sticks celery, diced

50 gm tomato paste

1 x 400gm tin crushed tomatoes

200 gm cherry tomatoes, halved

2 cups chicken stock

1 fennel bulb, cut into wedges

150 gm kalamata olives

2 bay leaves

salt and pepper

Method:

In a large frying pan with a tight-fitting lid, fry the chicken pieces in the olive oil until brown all over, then transfer to a bowl.

Fry the onion, garlic and fennel seeds and celery over a low heat until the onion softens, then add the tomato paste and stir over the heat for 2 minutes.

Add the tinned tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and chicken stock and bring to the boil.

Return the chicken to the pan with the fennel, olives and bay leaves, cover and simmer on a very low heat for 1 hour.

Season with salt and pepper and serve with toasted sourdough to soak up all the juices.

THE JAZZ LEGENDS BOB AND LEN BARNARD

NOOSA Heads Jazz Club’s concert on Tuesday November 22 at The Majestic Theatre Pomona is a tribute to the late Bob Barnard, the Noosa Heads Jazz Club’s Patron and great supporter since its inception in the mid-1990s, and his brother, the late Len Barnard.

To mark the occasion the Jazz Club is featuring Rebecca Barnard, Len’s daughter who continued the musical tradition of the Barnard family as a singer-songwriter. Bob and Len’s parents Jim and Kath Barnard ran The Kath Barnard Jazz Band in Melbourne in the 1930s and 40s. Len joined the band as a drummer in the 1940s at the age of 12 and Bob debuted as a trumpet player at age 13 in 1947. Both went on to stellar careers in the world of jazz both in Australia and overseas. Rebecca will be supported by Brett Iggulden trumpet, Paul Williams clarinet and sax, Chris Schnack trombone, Jo Bloomfield piano, Dave Burrows guitar, Richard Stevens sousaphone and Cal Duffy on drums For information and bookings go to noosajazzclub.com, email info@noosajazzclub.com or phone 0478 256 245.

A sublime experience in the country

WHAT happens when you cross a country pub with a restaurant and micro-brewery – and a lime farm?

A new food and entertainment venue at Kia Ora, located between Gympie and Tin Can Bay, Sublime Farm & Brewery is the result – and it’s now making a mark in the live music scene.

“Relax your soul with good food and great music” is the message, and the menu is already providing good farmgrown or locally sourced ingredients.

It’s a big range on offer, with a la carte items such as seafood chowder, rump steaks, Indian curries, oysters, salads and pasta, as well as more standard pub fare such as burgers, steak sandwiches and pies.

Don’t too surprised to find a pleasant lime twist infused into a few menu items –and drinks. After all, why not use the lime far product when you can?

Live music is already a big part of the action. Feature nights each month are the Jam Nights – held on the first Thursday of each month with local musos all getting the chance to have a play.

And there are Sublime Full Moon Harvest nights (coinciding with the full moon each month). That event involves a set menu with a variety of roast meats, veggies and salads and of course great music.

Bumper crowd welcomes new art gallery in Imbil

IT was a full house at Art on Yabba, fine art gallery, when it opened recently in the main street of Imbil.

The exciting not-for-profit art space run by Mary Valley Artslink fits the group’s vision of promoting the arts and culture in the Mary Valley.

“It presents the opportunity for artists to exhibit their work in a small, friendly country gallery with loads of atmosphere,” Artslink’s Heinke Butt said.

Art lovers mingled with artists for the event, which benefitted from the new garden and function space created by Wild Vine Café developer Allan Rainbow.

The gallery will feature both local artists and artists from further afield and will offer opportunities for artists in residence.

The opening exhibition - From Chatsworth to Arkaroola … the Spirit of Land - features two local artists, painter

and sculptor Kym Barrett and ceramic and multimedia artist Yeats Gruin.

Kym’s work visually demonstrates her love for the outback. Her hankering for a new landscape experience came to fruition during a recent trip from Chatsworth to outback Arkaroola.

She said her work from both landscapes described the exterior form, the interior aliveness of the locale and her sense of being in the place.

As a visual artist, Yeats Gruin’s work extends through fibre sculptures and ceramics engaging with contemporary forms of artistic expression using texture, colour, form and a dialogue based on a personal concept or pursued theme.

Yeats said she regarded being an artist as a means of creating a personal statement in a poetic or spiritual way.

The gallery will also act as a hub for

workshops and talks to share art with the community. It is open Thursday to Sunday 10am to 3pm. While you are at the gallery, indulge in locally grown food and delicious, locally roasted coffee at the Wild Vine Café, the Mary Valley’s newest food destination.

BEATRICE PROST – ALUMINIUMS RETROSPECTIVE ON SHOW

ARTIST Beatrice Prost is holding her first retrospective of her works on aluminium at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery during November.

Beatrice has worked with aluminium since 2017. Working in series, she has created more than 70 one-of-a-kind original wall pieces. Many have been included in collections and curated art shows over the years.

This exhibition combines some of her very

first carved artworks with her latest series.

With a strong sense of design, Beatrice’s markmaking emphasises the light and patterns found in nature. As her works connect us to Australian nature, she brings the onlooker closer to the magic of our presence on Earth.

Beatrice’s aluminiums will be on show from November 5 to 30 in the Carriage Room of the gallery.

The gallery’s Banana Shed exhibition space

will host entries into the annual Great Upcycle Challenge from November 2 to 13. Hosted by Pomona Community House, the event across Noosa Shire challenges us to come up with creative ideas on how to upcycle and diminish local waste.

Pomona Railway Station Gallery is at 10 Station Street Pomona. Opening hours are 10am-4pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 2pm Saturday and Sunday.

THINGS are hotting up at the Factory as the year ends. And it’s time to become a member of the Cooroy Butter Factory Friends.

The year’s penultimate exhibition period featuring Darren White’s beautiful paintings, the creativity of Noosa District High School students, and the totally immersive Sharka Bosakova exhibition is only a prelude to the Butter Factory Friends exhibition and Christmas fair in December.

And as they say in the ads, there’s more!

Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (CBFAC) is pleased to announce a new exhibition space in 2023 devoted to emerging artists. The new gallery space will provide an opportunity for artists who may have never had a solo show in a gallery to show their work and to gain mentoring advice on how to design an exhibition, market it, write about it and price it. And in addition, CBFAC will offer financial

incentives such as rental and commission discounts to encourage each exhibitor to actively participate in this new program. But to be part of the end of year shebang and the 2023 emerging exhibition program you will need to be a Butter Factory Friend. So go online to https:// www.butterfactoryartscentre.com.au and join today. Join before November 21 to at least ensure a place in the final year Friends prize exhibition – Eclectica.

Daren White’s Take Me Somewhere, Anywhere, NDHS’s Alt. kNOWledge and Sharka Bosakova’s Hollows and Thorns run until December 4 with Eclectica and the Christmas market kicking off on December 9. ‘POLISHED LOVE’ BY LORENZO @ THE ORIGINAL EUMUNDI MARKETS

LORENZO has a philosophy on life. ‘Find the love in everything you do, then let it shine through.’

Love is present in many forms in Lorenzo’s life especially at his stall of 11 years – Noosa Artisan - at the Original Eumundi Markets. Here his customers discover love can be held, created, moulded, and perfected to bring the joy of a new beginning. Raw materials Lorenzo uses in his craft may have once sat in your grandmother’s cutlery draw, but now found in an antique store, opp shop, market place or on eBay. Old spoons, forks, and implements for dining that once graced tables of generations, become the silverware Lorenzo chooses to bring to life in his Noosa Artisan collections.

Every Wednesday and Saturday Noosa Artisan can be discovered at the Original Eumundi Markets. Lorenzo, as Master Craftsman of upcycled unique jewellery, skilfully handcrafts items to capture the essence of past, present, and future. A skilled eye for creation brings new life to old silverware invigorating

his passion for possibilities in Rings, Bracelets, Pendants, Whale Tale Jewellery, and other Bespoke Silverware. Lorenzo’s creations have found new homes in Japan, Copenhagen, USA, New Zealand, and many overseas destinations. As Lorenzo said, “When you connect with the philosophy of life, you go with the flow. Love the love of re-using and you discover the love in what it brings and what it can do for you.”

Find your own unique piece at the famous Original Eumundi Markets be it rain, hail, or sunshine.

Lorenzo’s story is another of the many just waiting to be discovered at the famous Original Eumundi Markets every Wednesday and Saturday rain, hail, or shine. Come visit us for your own journey of discovery. eumundimarkets.com.au

Changing Exhibitions at Eumundi Museum

EUMUNDI

Museum is an essential part of the Eumundi experience. It is located in a beautiful old church on the main street, Memorial Drive. And it reopened in June after significant renovations, which are still continuing.

It showcases an excellent introduction to the history of the town, with fascinating objects and many large photographs illustrating the main themes. If you are a history buff, you must explore the wonderful displays: stone tools, early settlers, timber industry, church organ, farming, telephone exchange, cameras, the QCWA, and the market.

For families there is a great birdsongs game on one of the touchscreens – play the bird call then try and match the photo to one of our local species. It’s lots of fun and educational. And there are bugs in resin to touch, look at under a magnifying glass and

draw. One of the temporary exhibitions at the renovated museum is changing. Get in quick to see the QCWA Centenary as it is about to close. The new exhibition, opening in December, is ‘Fifty Years after The Vietnam War’. The museum has interviewed a handful of local veterans to explore how they feel about the conflict and their experience today, fifty years after Australia withdrew. The exhibition will be on display in the new expansion at the rear of the museum until April 2023.

Eumundi Museum, 73 Memorial Drive, Eumundi. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am - 3pm. Free entry.

LLEW O’BRIEN Federal Member for Wide Bay

THERE is always incredible community spirit on display from the diverse range of volunteer groups throughout the Wide Bay electorate.

Recently at Cooroy I opened the 32nd annual Cooroora Woodcraft Show. So many people came along to support the event, hosted by the Cooroora Woodworkers Club, and enjoyed the skills and talents of their members and the entries of other competitors from Wide Bay and further afield.

Cooroora Woodworkers Club teaches people new skills and gives back to the community.

Their members constructed the outdoor benches in the Japanese Gardens at the much-loved Katie Rose Cottage Hospice, providing a peaceful place of contemplation, relaxation and reflection for terminally ill patients and their families and friends.

Cooroora Woodworkers also make a vast quantity of wooden toys which the Salvation Army distributes to children at Christmas, and they built a blackbutt counter for Parkyn’s Hut Tewantin Explore Centre. The Centre is run solely by volunteers and was recently recognised as Queensland’s Best Visitor Information Centre.

Wide Bay owes much to its volunteers, who generously give of their time and energy in many different ways to strengthen local communities. Volunteering is not only

good for the community, but it can also be a great way to meet people and take on new challenges.

It’s never too early, or too late to learn new skills, and the Cooroora Woodworkers Club is a friendly place where you can learn a range of techniques, including woodturning, scroll sawing, box making, wood carving, and pyrography.

Their volunteers are masters at showcasing the beauty of natural timber and the Club offers a welcoming space where their fabulous creations can be developed, displayed, and admired, or where items can be built for use in the wider community.

IT has been wonderful to get out between Parliamentary sittings with mobile offices last month at Pomona and Cooran, plus numerous other events and catch ups with our volunteer organisations and businesses, many who have been kicking goals in being nominated for a number of awards!

Congratulations to organisers of both Noosa Open Studios and the Great Noosa Trail Walk – two fantastic events highlighting our amazing artists and spectacular offerings of our Country Noosa.

After relentless advocacy starting when I was a Councillor, Six Mile Creek Bridge #7 construction has started! This new bridge will be built to the west of the existing bridge so traffic can continue flowing through construction. As reported, to improve safety, capacity and reliability, this bridge will be replaced with a wider, 2-lane concrete structure with flood immunity. Once constructed, the bridge will be slid into its final position with the work expected to take about 18 months to complete, weather permitting. Every effort will be made to keep disruptions to a minimum and I look forward to gathering with those who stood by the bridge with me some years ago, and those that have since assisted, to celebrate the greater safety this will bring.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) continue with roadworks on state routes to address damage from floods, wet weather and excessive heavy haulage vehicles. Pothole and pavement repairs on Kin Kin Road have been a priority, as well as capital works projects, which is causing delays, and at times sleep disruption, which I know is very frustrating for residents, and in which TMR are endeavouring to keep to a minimum.

The dedicated turning lane on Cooroy Noosa Road into Sivyers Road, a former accident hotspot, is now complete, and speed reviews are being considered on two state roads in response to resident concerns.

As always, too little room here to relay all the news so please head to our Facebook page, Noosa 360, and our monthly newsletter which you can find at www.sandybolton.com. If you have any questions regarding state related matters, please don’t hesitate to contact our office at 5319 3100 or email noosa@parliament.qld. gov.au.

With this being my last column for the year, from my staff and myself, we wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday period spending time with loved ones. And a reminder to be fire, flood and storm ready. See you on the Christmas trail!

NATIONAL PLAN TO END VIOLENCE

Queensland has been working closely with the Commonwealth and other states and territories to ensure the plan reflects the key issues for women and children experiencing violence.

The National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022–2032 will set the foundation for governments to implement frameworks and policies to end gender-based violence. The Plan sets out an ambitious 10-year vision where everyone deserves to live free from fear and feel safe at home, work, school, in the community, and online

I am particularly pleased that the National Plan includes a focus on addressing sexual violence, as well as recognising the intersection between domestic and family violence and the family law system.

This National Plan represents a real opportunity for action to address the housing crisis for women and children escaping violence. Learn more: www.dss. gov.au/ending-violence

Noosa Council is thrilled to become the first Qld Council to use new interactive 3D hazard mapping technology to educate locals on how disaster events such as bushfires could personally impact them. We’ll be announcing a series of sessions soon where residents will be able to see exactly how a bushfire might behave if it unfolds in their immediate area. Knowing the risks bushfires pose to an immediate neighbourhood will help locals to be prepared. The technology, known as Simtable, uses a projector to overlay hazard projections over local mapping and terrain in 3D. The new tech is part of Council’s ongoing effort to reduce the shire’s bushfire risk and make the community more resilient. Over the past two years we have invested significantly in measures aimed

at preventing a repeat of the 2019 fires, including more controlled burns, greater trail maintenance and appointment of an in-house officer to oversee local hazard reduction efforts. Education is also very important if we are to be disaster ready so I would encourage residents to attend the community sessions once finalised so you can get to know your own risk, which will help inform household emergency plans.

Noosa Council is extremely proud to be recognised for the development of Council’s Risk Policy, collecting the Southeast Queensland LGMS Risk Excellence award. The policy, adopted in September this year, was the culmination of two years’ work. The award recognises the collaborative efforts between councillors, the executive and governance teams to drive highest standards in the organisation. Speaking of awards, our Tablelands Road Bridge B replacement project in the hinterland has also won an award. The project took out the award for best project between $1 million- $2 million in the IPWEAQ Excellence Awards and our wonderful Hinterland Adventure Playground in Cooroy is in the running to be named one of Qld’s best managed projects. These awards are a very worthy acknowledgement of how incredibly hard and well Noosa Council staff work.

Until next month, stay safe, Clare

ARE you one of the vast majority of people who don’t set goals? Whilst research claims different percentages, it is always a relatively small number of people who do set them.

The thing I love about goals is that they invite me to dream about what is possible. In the space when I allow myself think about this, I feel electric rockets of excitement as I listen to the whispers of my soul.

In her Oscar winning speech, Lupita Nyong’ shared “No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.” Who’s to say what you can or can’t achieve? The answer to this is always the same – YOU.

But here’s the thing, if you want to make

improvements in your life, the key is to get clear on what you want and set some goals. A pure focus on the outcome or results can be disheartening, as they can feel overwhelming. So, it’s essential that you also set smaller manageable steps towards your goal.

Let’s say you want to give your garden a makeover. This could overwhelm the heartiest of gardeners! Using the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound) goal structure you could create a simple plan to make this dream a reality.

Perhaps the first step is in removing the plants and weeds from one garden bed next weekend, and then preparing the soil and

replanting it the next. If you repeat this in different garden beds eventually you will finish the makeover.

Your goals can be enormous, or they may be some small simple changes. Whilst they may not matter to anyone else, they make a difference to your life. This month, I invite you to dream a little, set a goal and start taking one small step towards that goal.

NUTRITION with Sarah Gray

FOOD PSYCHOLOGIST

“A WHAT?” I hear you say! Yes, there is such a thing, and yes 99% of people have an unhealthy view of food in relation to body image, and good health. Food behaviours play a huge part in the global epidemic known as over-weight & obesity. Hundreds of billions of dollars are spent trying to stem the tide of obesity world-wide. Our health is our wealth and what we put into our body is often controlled by what our mind is telling us. Yes, you heard correctly, our head space is often the cause of overeating.

People are so critical of themselves. They are almost hard-wired to think negatively, and are their harshest critics. Studies report that 99% of women have admitted they do not like what they see in the mirror. If you believe that this is just a woman thing, then you are sadly mistaken. A large percentage of men with eating disorders and poor body image has become frighteningly common.

So, what does this have to do with a

Nutritionist? Absolutely everything. Food can make us feel invigorated, full of energy, positive and even hopeful. But it also has a dark side. Food can make us feel depressed, anxious, tired, overwhelmed and sadly even suicidal. Nutrition therefore is a major player in stemming the tide of self-abuse by overeating. Eating less processed fats and sugars has been proven to have a positive impact on mental health. Conversely, eating whole fresh foods has a positive impact. Seeing a nutritionist can set you on the right path for life. Education, and awareness is the key.

Remember, when your head is in a good place your body will follow.

You are what you eat! www.foodtrition.com.au, @foodtrition1

Queensland Christmas with NSW Christmas Bush

IF you’re finding the scientific name (Ceratopetalum) a little hard to get your tongue around then rest assured, you’re not alone!

So let’s break it down to it’s Greek rootsCerato (pronounced serato) means horned; and ‘petalum’ means broad and flat (like a petal), so, loosely translated, Ceratopetalum means ‘horned petal’ - bet you weren’t expecting that fun fact. And for anyone with dinosaur obsessed children, quiz them about ceratosaurus (a horned version of the infamous T-Rex) - you may very well impress them!

But now, let’s ‘dig’ a bit deeper to find out more about this stunning native plant that has captured the Christmas Spirit of East

Coast Australians for centuries.

Ceratopetalum originally came from NSW where it is naturally found on rainforest edges and has since been cultivated as a commercial flowering crop for both the domestic and export market (mostly to Japan).

At first glance you may think the plant produces abundant red flowers but if you take a closer look you will see that, in fact, the flowers are dainty and white, with the sepals (the outer parts of the flower that form the bud) being responsible for the rich ‘glamour red’ colour.

While Ceratopetalum comes into flower in NSW at Christmas time, here in sunny Queensland flowering occurs in October

and transitions into the glamour red by November, in the lead up to Christmas.

The nectar it produces attracts butterflies, bees and other bio-enhancing insects in swathes, further enhancing the biodiversity of the area.

As the green leaves, white flowers and red sepals all dance and sway in the breeze, it’s easy to see why this gorgeous plant is celebrated as Australia’s Christmas Bush.

For more info on this plant pop in to see Jacinta and the team at Natives R Us Nursery.

POMONA PV POWERED LAUNDROMAT

ZERO Emissions Noosa (ZEN Inc.)

research shows that businesses which invest in solar regularly report the economic benefits it delivers. Pomona Laundromat has shown that not only has its new 17kW solar PV system offered economic savings, but the project has also benefited the community and brought it one step further on the journey to net zero.

Pomona Laundromat owner, Frank Burkardt states “I now feed more than double the amount of energy back into the grid than

I take out. Energy companies pay back a fraction of what they charge so I would rather give it back to the community and tourism by offering a free ebike charging station.”

Frank installed the solar system to offset the laundromat’s carbon emissions and his next step is to invest in a battery system so the laundromat can be independent from energy suppliers and go off grid.

In addition to solar, Frank has upgraded to LED lighting, implemented a timer for the TV and ceiling fan and installed outside

power points for free ebike chargers for use when the sun is out.

“I am hoping that other businesses and maybe our Council will follow my lead. If anyone wants to follow me, contact me and I’ll show you how to do it,” said Frank.

THE GREAT NOOSA TRAIL WALK CELEBRATED

THE Great Noosa Trail Walk celebrated it’s tenth year running, with over 230 walkers taking to the Noosa Biosphere Trails to walk 56kms between Cooroy, Cooran, Kin Kin and Pomona this weekend.

With the support of local businesses from these Hinterland Towns, this is a true community event - run by volunteers of the Cooroy Future Group Inc and supported by groups such as the Rotary Club of Eumundi, Cooroy Pomona Lions, Pomona Cooran Cutters and the Kin Kin Community Group, as well as Tourism Noosa, Noosa Council and Queensland Parks and Wildlife.

Participant Paul, an environmental scientist, commented “for me the walk was a treasure trove of the diverse life forms in the sub tropical rain forest, interesting

fungi, native orchids in flower and the walk highlighted how important it is for us to save this native bush.”

For the first time ever the event also provided a one day experience, which gave walkers a chance to join in the fun for just one day if they couldn’t commit to getting away for the weekend!

The three day walkers and guides, walked 23kms on day 1 and 2 and camped in the local towns, enjoying delicious country fair at PC Cutters in Cooran and Black Ant Gourmet in Kin Kin for dinners. The final day of the event was a leisurely 10km stroll for those wanting to complete the full route, followed by a celebration together at the Pomona Distilling Co.

E-MTBs – Smiles for miles

WE live in a world of electrification so, for better or worse, I guess it was inevitable that the good old simple push bike would eventually follow suite. Personally, I love my E-Mountain bike (E-MTB), for the simple reason that it allows me to cover more ground in my time-poor schedule. Jump on social media and it won’t take you long to find some very polarizing opinions, some calling them Cheater Bikes or motorbikes.

Today’s legal E-MTBs are pedal assist so unlike motorbikes they require pedalling. The amount of effort required is variable depending on the assistance level you set. This is a game changer as I now get to choose my workout - hard, easy, anaerobic or aerobic. Getting tired, simply hit the plus button with your left thumb for more assistance. Want to work-out harder, hit the minus.

One of the downsides is cost and it is a biggy, as quality full suspension E-MTBs tend to cost as much as their internal combustion cousins, but they are a lot cheaper to maintain and so much quieter.

E-MTBs started to appear in 2016 with the Specialized Levo being the first

legal model to market. They are now in their 3rd generation with many different models. Six years on and most bicycle manufacturers have joined the fray. If you are buying new always consider warranty and service. Specialized give 2 years on motor and electronics and this flows across to 2nd owners but you will need a copy of the original receipt. Preloved can save a lot of dollars if the bike has been cared for and well maintained.

Having a big battery and motor makes them weigh up to around 25kg but this weight is coming down as technology progresses. Some weigh as little as 17kg.

The biggest positive is all those wonderful trail networks that we have on the Sunny Coast are open to ebikes. We also have hundreds of kilometers of fire trails to explore that wind through the hills of our beautiful hinterlands.

The bottom line is that your skills will improve faster because you will ride further and your fitness will build quicker because you will want to ride longer. Try one, you will not stop smiling.

See you on the trails! Andy Flanagan, mountain biker, trail runner, unicyclist & senior mech Spoke n Trail.

just continues to improve out of sight. She has skills rarely seen in an 11 year old,” Coach Mark Evans said.

Cohen had a cracking bout against Catrell Rolfe-Chase from All Stars Boxing where Cohen was awarded the win with a split points decision. Both boys had their moments in a highly skilled bout.

Carson was also in a tough bout against

Aaron Grealey from All Stars Boxing. Carson started well landing some good shots as both boys bit down on their mouth guards and traded punches. This was an intense fight with very few moments where there

was little action as both boys kept a high work rate. At the final bell Aaron was awarded the win via a unanimous decision.

Aaron is off to Spain to represent Australia next month so this bout was a good measuring stick for Carson to see where he needs to be.

“More often than not as a Coach I am continually monitoring these kids performance and tonight was a great night performance wise. These guys are proof that you get out of this sport and in life what you put into it. Happy Coach again,” Evans said.

Thank you to our opponents for pushing us to the final bell.
